What It's Like To Be A Mixed Race Model

Dark, tanned, black, brown?
I don't care what you call me...that's just semantics. ;)

In my seven years of modelling, race has continued to be a prevalent issue in the modelling industry.  As a result, I made a decision a long time ago, to be a freelance photographic model.

It began the day I walked into a very renowned modelling agency to apply to be on their books.   The name will not be disclosed, as I am not a believer of naming and shaming a company for its own values and beliefs.

I was nervous, sweaty palmed and wearing my best business clothes and at the tender age of eighteen, all I wanted was for a little recognition into this otherwise...clandestine world of VIP.

Nevertheless, an immaculately presented lady sat me down and pawed over my portfolio with mildly disguised disinterest.  After a couple of minutes, she sighed, passed me back my folder and asked me,

"Look around you, what do you see on our walls?"

I glanced up wearily, already knowing my answer, met with images of tall, blonde, blue eyed beauties.  Their beauty was not the first thing that stood out, like a sore thumb.  It was their milk and honey complexion.  Their pale faces.  Their plainly Caucasian backgrounds.

"They're all white and tall?" I blurted out.

"That's right, sweetie." the lady purred.  "See, you're very pretty, but...the truth is, you won't sell.  Our clients simply won't pay for someone like you.  You're very exotic, and that's beautiful, but it's also a problem."

After what seemed like forever, I stood up in all my 5"3 glory, thanked the lady politely for her time and, I left the agency with a full portfolio and a heavy heart.

In the year that followed, I continued to pass up the opportunity to apply to agencies that required their models to be 5"10 and over, knowing that being petite and dark in an industry where being the lightest and tallest won you a place above others, was not going to serve me well.

It didn't make me bitter, it just made me realise the constraints of being agency represented. There wasn't anything wrong with me.  My previous work with renowned but niche photographers had proven my ability to model.  With all of this knowledge, I decided my best weapon was my own knowledge, talent and confidence in myself.

Blessed with a host of talented photographic references and friends I'd made along the way, I took to self promotion via social media and decided that I was not going to 'beat them nor join them.'

I was simply going to stand alone.

Because, you see, in a world where uniformity is desirable, and the difference of us all fails to receive any recognition, it is standing alone that gets you noticed.

My mum is fair. My dad is dark.
And yet, I don't belong in either world.
I am somewhere in between.

I can't change the colour of my skin. Nor do I want too. It's my complexion against my Euro-Afro
features that got me noticed in the niche, underground world of creative photographic modelling.

I may not ever grace the covers of Vogue.  Or walk a runway. But, my works speaks for itself. And that's why I'll never give up celebrating and embracing who I am, or how I look.

Easter Part One

There were only three things that made her really happy in life.
Strawberry milkshakes, kindness and being politically incorrect.

The feel of real fur gliding over her soft shoulders and the tickle of her hair against the nape of her neck,
made her feel, even if just for a second...that she was loved.

Ebony & Ivory Inspired Shoot

These are a few sneek peeks from a photoshoot I did with the gorgeous Kiki, a month back.
We were shrouded in all sorts of materials and lingerie and shot under studio lighting.

Little Girl Lost

Sometimes, it's not about snapping the perfect image.  It's about the emotion behind the lens and behind the person.

In a world where we are taught to swallow our tears, it's hard to ever  express when we feel a little sad, a little vulnerable and ultimately...a little lost.
That's why i wanted "Little Girl Lost" to be as intimate, lonely and stripped as possible.
To capture what it means to be a young girl.

Walk A Mile In These Louboutins

Yesterday looked a little something like this.  After a crazy shift at work, I woke up drearily at 9am to a phonecall from my excited photographer, Alberto.

"Are you free in an hour?"
I was showered, dressed and groomed within 20 minutes and on the road in the hour.
We shot at my favourite studio and it began as a glamour shoot.  Kiki in her Louboutins, me running around barefoot, one arm through a long chiffon dress, a glimpse of my red laced bra...

During the shoot, I'd spied a sort of hessian material which I thought would make an awesome prop.
"Can we shoot in this?" I asked.
Ten pairs of eyes turned to me.
"How?"
"Kiki and I can get inside it and show a little skin. It'll be a bit sensual, but nothing overly risque..."

Well, sufficed to say - the raw, honest, vulnerable images of two vastly different girls wrapped in a hessian type sack, were stunning and are being submitted internationally as I type.

I can't wait! xoxo

Southern Shoot Sneak Peak

© EleGlance Photography, Glynn Jackson.

There's something so magical about shooting near a waterfall. It has a sort of Southern charm that gets lost at the beach.

The smell of mulch and mud and fresh grass and country air alongside the gush of running water over the rocks...

And the best news is I got chosen to represent Covergirl of Australia's Swimsuit Edition.

Yay :)

Behind The Scenes.

End Result © Marjorie Rose.

Today was so much fun.  In biting cold wind, I shot a beautiful sequence of editorial photos with Marjorie and model, Eddie. We moved around quite a lot on location and walking back through town carrying a mini suitcase in stilettos and a strapless dress caused a little too much attention. I ended the evening with coffee, seaweed salad and pizza. Not all in that order. ;)

Sneek Peek: Summer in Winter.

© Marjorie Rose Photography 2013

Escaping the city for a few hours yesterday for an editorial photo shoot was amazing.
We drove all the way into the country and found this amazing field and creek filled with mulch and knee high reeds.  It was really sticky and the sun had turned the water, this amazing sky blue.

Hot chips and lemonade finished off the day.  Marjorie and I drove back down the highway, watching the marmalade orange sun, set over the sea.

My flats were totally wrecked and walking home in my new Malibu denim shorts and 1920s style bikini (below) was even colder.

But it was 100% worth it.
