I Want To See You Be Brave: Three Ways To Cope With Invisible Illness

Copyright: Glynn Jackson Photography

A customer said to me last week,  “Why are you limping today?” and then on the same breath, followed with “Fell over and had a big weekend, did you?”

I replied with “Long story” and walked away, but the truth is…I happen to have a broken hip.

And no, not through some crazy sexcapade that happened at Coachella either.   I can usually conceal it quite easily as I’m on my feet all day anyway but on this particular occasion, eight hours of standing was taking its toll and my body was complaining.  Yes, the otherwise normal, petite, pretty looking girl was walking somewhat abnormally as she made a quick dash for the bathroom.

It gets tiring, having to tell the same story over and over to people who look at you with a blank expression and say "But you're too pretty, too young, too normal to be sick."  and when I consider the amount of strangers I must pass in the street, suffering MS, depression, chronic fatigue, cancer and other things that can be hidden behind a brave smile and a strong willpower, it’s an easy consolation.

Speak Up

No one can help you, unless they know what’s wrong.  This doesn’t mean carrying around a proverbial cross, it just means having the freedom to express when you’re struggling to get through the day.  Whether this means asking your boss for a time out, having a vent to a friend or being honest about your capabilities, you should remind yourself that, there’s no shame in being human.

Mum’s The Word

On the same token, you should never feel the need to explain yourself unnecessarily.  If someone asks you a question that you find unnecessarily nosy or inappropriate, you’re doing your integrity a disservice by answering it.   Unfortunately that old adage “Curiosity killed the cat, but satisfaction brought it back” is especially pertinent for our generation, nevertheless, when it comes to your private affairs (illness being one of them), silence is key.

Know Your Limits

Yes, reaching for the sky is all very well and pushing yourself to achieve your goals, but what about when you’re faced with the kind of limitations that only get worse when you strive the hardest? The body isn’t bulletproof unfortunately and as it’s the only one we have, sometimes it’s not a matter of willpower, it’s a matter of nurturing yourself.

Keep hydrated, eat regular meals and don’t tell yourself that you can function on three hours sleep, if you physically can’t.

Melbourne, Goodbyes & Pikachu Onesies

I know. It's embarrassing how long I've been MIA for.
A whole two months.

In these two months, so much has happened. I managed to get really ill and had to defer college for a semester so I decided I needed to escape my little, old town and fly off to Melbourne for a week, just to breathe in a different kind of air.

Melbourne for the record...is beautiful.
Revisiting the city again after a whole two years filled with me lost nostalgia.

It's bristling with these massive apartment blocks and skyscrapers and highways that never seem to end.
The city is stunningly busy and walking around is like stepping into a catalogue for the Aussie version of the upper east side.

Everyone is super friendly and super busy and super designer and everywhere you go, the atmosphere is filled with this busy enthusiasm and passion for...LIFE!

I had so much fun and learned so much about myself in the short time I was there, living with loved ones, staying up too late, exploring the city and driving down dark freeways at night, the wind caught in my hair, the music up loud, the memories etched in the stars.

Most importantly, I learned that, even in a city as busy as Melbourne, anywhere can be the loneliest place in the world if you have no one.

It was really hard saying goodbye.

And on that note, I'll leave ya'll with the last photo I took before I left, inspired by a few too many Johnny Walkers and someone who will always hold a special place in my heart... ;)

New Year

Rhi and I welcomed in 2014 with cold fountains, hot cinnamon donuts, the feel of wet grass saturating our dresses and the loud, familiar bang of fireworks.

Every year brings with it remnants of the past and the exciting possibility of something new.
This year, I shed regrets from the years before and welcomed in something beautiful.
No expectations, no regrets, just the happy, cathartic feeling of letting go...

Happy 2014!

Love...or something like it.

Love.  What does it even mean anymore? Nothing.
 Sex? Just another commodity.
Relationships? Irreplaceable.
Commitment? Temporary.

We live in a materialist world where almost everything can be bought. We strive for our careers, our success, but do we ever strive to find someone we can be completely real with? Someone who isn't replaceable. We get caught up in the glamour of games, unattainable people, fabricated flings, lust, desire, temporary euphoria. We're afraid to let our concepts go. Afraid of being hurt. Afraid of being...human.

Can you remember your first kiss?  your first love affair? your first relationship? the first time someone made you feel genuinely alive with happiness? What's changed?

Our ability to love is what distinguishes us from anything else in this vast universe.  Our ability to see a whole world encapsulated in someone else's smile. Our ability to bond and care and nurture. Our ability to feel and express emotions, so complex, they cannot be described. Our ability to hold another person and be happy to live out the rest of your lives together.

The moment we stop remembering to fall in love, is the time when living becomes simply existing.

XOXO

Today Was Beautiful and May Never Come Again.

Whenever I go down the bay, I always have to go into my favourite lolly store. Even if my eyes only briefly gaze over the iced worms, chocolate almonds or lolly bananas. Today I chose salted pistachios and croissants over rainbow jellybeans.

It's almost a week till spring and I'm already counting down to the days when I can wear bikinis and boyfriend shirts and smell the seawater on my skin and the sun in my hair.

TGIF.

This friday has been hectic. I began the day by making my friend Gemma, brunette.
She had been all sorts of fire reds and honeycomb blondes for a while and decided she wanted to go a little darker and add volume and soft curls to her hair.

So, voila! Then I finished off my Friday night with my best friend, indulging in caramelised banana pancakes (yum!), vanilla vodka and strawberry milkshakes. And of course, hitting the dance floor...

How did you spend your weekend? ;)

Monday-itis? I don't think so.

Monday in a nutshell. Colouring,  crimping, curling and straightening hair and then home from college to a terribly fattening but delicious dinner at Nandos with my best mate.

Time to get some much needed Zzzzs for tomorrow's photoshoot...
Pictures to be posted soon.

Did anyone suffer Monday-itis?

Lately.

It's nice to be back! And even nicer to have a day off to recap on everything that's happened thus far.  Holidays are over so I'm back to spending more time at the salon than I am at home! Add work, cocktails, friends and writing to the mix and I haven't had time to upgrade my blog.

But this Cocoa Bean is officially back :)
